Who doesn’t like to protect his or herself? Who doesn’t like to take precautionary measures? Who doesn’t like to cover up? Unless you are a nudist or the Devil himself, you will want to wear a mask during these difficult times of the CoronaVirus. In fact, that is exactly what Daphney Rene Sylvestre has done once again with her special touch of elegance.

After being in the limelight or the spotlight for so long, successful politicians are used to all kinds of exposure. Even when their ego is tested, they refuse to show that they are vulnerable. For example, former Vice-President Dick Cheney who has had several heart surgeries refused to wear a mask during the CoronaVirus pandemic. Yet, his wife Liz had to convince him that “it is ok for men to wear a mask”. So then he did. Now in this particular instance, I have to say that this example was used simply to point out the gravity of the situation and not necessarily for political reference or affiliation.

With that said, Daphney Rene Sylvestre (DR$) didn’t need anyone to tell her how serious the pandemic crisis is. By nature, she was one of the very first individuals to wear a mask and practice social distancing when necessary. She once said to me: “First of all, I have to say that I hate wearing a mask. I just don’t like that sensation. Either way, I have to be safe and careful. Therefore, I have created my own mask”.

Initially, I thought she was joking. I thought she had just bought a regular COVID-19 mask from the store and wrote a word like “Whatever” on it. Yet, I cannot describe the level of surprise that I felt when I discovered the amount of work and efforts she had placed into this little masterpiece.

Originally, the mask was designed with just one layer of fabric that was easily attached to the back of the head with ties or strings. It was very simple, easy to breathe, and very convenient to hurry up with. Then, the government issued a mandate that required every homemade mask to have at least three layers of fabric in order to be efficient against the CoronaVirus. At this point, she tried the regular face masks that were easily found in the stores and similar to those handed out by various organizations. The reaction is that she couldn’t stand it. It was too tight and she couldn’t breathe very well. In her own words, she states in her defense: “When my face is flawless after all this feeling working so hard, I don’t need a mask to squeeze the crap out of my cheeks and have me start from scratch with pimples and all”. With that said, Daphney Rene Sylvestre created her own mask.

Now, you might wonder what it looks like or what it is made of. Well, let me explain it as much as I can do so in easily understandable terms. Daphney Rene Sylvestre’s mask is composed of three pink layers of fabric. It also includes a fourth black layer that covers not only the face, but also the neck and parts of her chest. That is not all! To add a special touch, she also added a fifth layer with a gold appeal. She said the reason is because even in times of desperate situations, she has “to shine”! 

The mask even has a convenient pocket to keep her strings in order when she needs to grab a snack or a drink. That pocket also prevents her from being robbed with her strings just flapping around during these moments of relapse.

When I asked her if she is gratified with herself for this little masterpiece, she replied: “I did it because I had no choice. No one will penalize me or send me to jail with my mask, because I have overindulged in terms of protection”. She also took the time to point out the fact that she doesn’t encourage anyone to enjoy the process, because the pandemic has to stop. As much as she put in a lot of work into her personal safety, she can’t wait to get back to her normal life. She can’t wait to show off her pretty self again. She can’t wait to meet with people and socialize again in a professional manner. The only great aspect that came out of this experience is the great amount of virtual meetings that she has participated in with colleagues and friends. Once again, she learned a new way to communicate and to improve relations socially and financially. However, she is not ready to give up the personally safe exposure to people that she had been used to. Whether in restaurants, in churches, in public galleries, or in rallies, she wants to be able to mingle with others again without fear. Although a few things may be different for her, the priority is to be safe and covered up at all times.

I must say that the level of resilience and creativity that Daphney Rene Sylvestre displayed during this pandemic crisis surprised me. I knew she had talents and many skills.  But this time, she rose above expectations once again. She was not only cautious, but she also took the time to express a few words in a speech of compassion towards those in need. She is clearly exceptional. I can only hope that she will continue to find the success that she is looking for and that she honestly deserves.
